Skills for Care

We offer a Stairway to Success for any person interested in forging a career in Health & Social Care. The Skills for Care elements include Health & Safety, Food Safety, First Aid, etc. Work placement opportunities with domiciliary agencies, day centres or care homes have led to excellent job outcomes and access to NVQs once in employment.

Intent What will I learn?

You will enhance your employability and credibility to work in Social Care by developing and demonstrating your knowledge of topics essential for employment as a Carer. Your Skills for Care Journey will comprise a series of short (one day) courses to match the requirements of local employers in domiciliary, residential, healthcare, project-based support (e.g. recovery initiatives) in a paid or voluntary capacity.

Your learning will prepare you to satisfy external accreditation requirements leading to qualifications which can transform and up-date your CV increasing your chances of securing interviews, progressing into work or achieving advancement in a workplace.    

6 one- day courses comprise the Skills for Care Programme delivered over thirty hours.

What other skills or qualifications do I need?

This programme provides a Journey the destination of which could be employment in Social Care. Applicants must have a full Information, Advice & Guidance Interview with a member of STEC staff to ensure they can make an informed choice about a career in the Care Sector. On the other hand, there is no prescribed threshold, so we welcome applicants without any prior qualifications. We recommend that you have a command of English Language (Entry Three is recommended as a minimum). You are welcome to apply and we can advise you on how well-prepared you may be.

You will require the ability to keep you work organised in a file and build up a portfolio of evidence.

It will be helpful if you have basic digital skills such as being able to connect to the internet, and use email but in this respect, STEC can support you to develop these skills through other programmes.

Implementation How will I learn?

Sessions will include a mix of tutor demonstration, classroom activities, working in groups, individual projects and homework.

Your full attendance in class will be required to help you to meet your learning targets.

How will I know I am making progress?

You will have a Personal Learning Plan (PLP), which you will update regularly.

Your tutor will also give you regular updates on your progress, both verbally and in writing.

Impact What can I expect to achieve?

When you successfully achieve your learning goals, following course completion you will receive the followings awards (as appropriate to your selection):

Health & Safety in the Workplace Level 2, Food Safety & Hygiene Level 2, Nutrition for Health Level 2 and optionally Emergency First Aid Level 3

What could this course lead to?

Our aim is that you use this knowledge to update your CV to improve your employability (for paid or voluntary work). However, the programme can be used as a learning foundation to progress to higher level vocational awards in Health and Social Care. Many accredited progression opportunities can be accessed via Liverpool Social Care Partnership or Liverpool Adult Learning Service. Your tutors at STEC are qualified in iag to support such progression.
